When I was in college studying exercise physiology, we always were aware of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) use as an ergogenic aid and at the time the research was still in it’s infancy and overall equivocal. However, in 2018 there’s been many more published papers and many have shown benefits on multiple levels (fat-loss, muscle-building, sport/exercise performance, kidney health, acid-base balance, digestive tract health, etc.). Personally, I’ve just experimented with 1/8-1/4 tsp of baking soda in 6-8 oz of water and my last few workouts have been amazing. Now perhaps this is a mindset moment via placebo effect, however, a placebo effect still has an effect 😉 All that said, there’s plenty enough evidence to support sensible baking soda use as part of a well-rounded balance diet. And quite frankly, it’s a natural common household item anyway for cleaning & baking purposes, but who knew this item would also have potent health & fitness benefits too!? Baking-soda spiked flax zucchini muffins anyone!? On a side note, I do not consume baking soda daily. I simply incorporate it sparingly and sensibly in times of desired added benefit via exercise/sport performance, alkalinity, etc.
